Dangerous precedent

The preamble of our constitution states that all Indians have solemnly decided to constitute our country into a social, secular and democratic republic. The country gives the fundamental right for all citizens to live and settle anywhere in this country. Today we are witnessing one of the dirtiest breaches of our constitutional laws. Is our country a hostage to a few people who lives only for money and power?

The recent attack on north Indians in Mumbai has spurred a new movement in our country. The north Indians have come to Maharashtra for their livelihood. They are beaten up by a group of political hoodlums who call themselves the savior of Maharashtra. They have even beaten a group of north Indians who have come to write a Railway examination.
The legislatures in the state have not taken any step in this regard. Every time they are just uttering words of condemnation after the attack. They have not done anything to prevent any further attacks. Even the High court of Maharashtra has condemned the attacks and had passed a gag order to silence the leader of the group.

Nothing could stop them as they kept attacking the people. The law of the land was tarnished. It was a good time for the media as they kept discussing the pros and cons of the attacks. I happened to see some people in the media even supporting the cause of the attacks. Two persons have already died regarding these recent incidents. One was a depressed young man and another was allegedly lynched by a group of people in a local train for the only reason that he was a north Indian. Where are we heading to? The very freedom that people enjoy; that is working and settling anywhere in our country is slowly losing its way.

Our country being a democratic one has given full power to the legislatures. Even if they are devoid of power and they keep watching these kinds of incidents without taking any proper action, then it’s high time for the civil society to step in to wage a war against these hooligans. The country is facing a serious internal threat. There will emerge a vigilante in every nook and corner of India. The legislature, executive and judiciary should work in tandem to stop this kind of anarchy. Nobody is above the law. Every action should be taken to contain this before it goes out of hand.

The Real Independence

India got Independence on August 15th, 1947.Everyone here are aware of that and no Indian can deny that very fact. But do we really got the freedom which we desired? India may be free from foreign rulers but are we really free from foreign invaders? India is still not free from foreign invaders. Three hundred and fifty years ago the invasion was through power. Now the invasion is through markets.

India was a poor country when it got independence. It was a tough task ahead for our leaders to take India through to the top of the world. Self belief was the key to India’s success to grow as a developing nation. Until 1990,we had many prime ministers and they all did their part to make good use of indigenous resources and India was growing in a rapid pace to compete with the global partners. One thing India was proud until 1990 was that India did not wish to enter the global markets and it was growing on its own without the help of other countries unlike our neighboring countries.

From 1990,the era of globalization began.India slowly started to enter into the world market.A few years passed by,the foreign companies have started to creep into our Indian market.I can correlate that entry with the entry of East India Company when the Mughals were ruling our country. Then they slowly started to develop into a monopoly as indigenous products started to slow down.Till now it has been a rapid growth for the foreign companies.A few Indian companies also have their brand in world market but they are very few compared to the number of foreign companies in India.I can correlate those companies with the princely states when the British was ruling our country.

Despite Indian products giving a good quality, the rich started looking for the brands.Slowly there was a change of trend in their life style too.Everybody started following the western culture.Indians are not devoid of intelligence. The foreign companies started to hire the best individuals and many IT companies started to flourish here. There was an exact U-turn in attitudes of many individuals. The purchasing power of the people started to increase.Everybody was on the lookout for iPods, cappuccino as for them the foreign brands give the utmost satisfaction. As for example, the Indian coffee house which was started many years ago started to decline. The diet of people changed.Everybody started wanting only burgers, pizzas.Due to this increase in purchasing power of the few,the inflation in the country went on an upward trend. The irony is that the worst affected by this was the poor people in the country. Due to the excessive use of foreign goods, global warming is on a rise. Now again the worst affected is the poor.

Today everyone is proud of the fact that the economic growth of India is above 9 p.c.But the impacts are countless. There is an increase in the poverty level. The prices of the products increase. There are no new projects coming up because of the lack of funds.People started taking loans without knowing their repaying capacity.Due to non repayment, banks started to crash. Thanks to the control by Reserve Bank of India(RBI) and strict laws by the government of India that India is somewhat insulated from global financial crisis. There was a heavy retrenchment of employees in various reputed companies. This is what we are today. Here starts the ugly face of globalization. We are free from foreign rulers but we are not totally free. They are dominating our markets and are indulged in brain-drain by taking the best brains for use in their country. So India has to wake up from these things and start working on a goal such that we are equally accessible to the world and we are strong enough to be ourselves. There lies the real Independence.

A Price-full journey

Everybody in this world may be ignorant of many things but for people, who are visiting Coimbatore, they need not know the demography or geography of the place but they ought to know about the three tyre taxi called “Auto rickshaw”.

Once, a friend of mine wished to see me at my hometown and I told him the route to my house. He told me that I need not pick him up and that he will manage by himself to reach my house. So I thought he may not be new to Coimbatore. He came by a morning train and took an auto rickshaw en route to my house from railway station.

The auto rickshaw driver in his first sight identified that the person was an outsider and told him that he knew the location and asked my friend to get in. It was a long journey with heavy traffic, roads with big potholes and the auto rickshaw driver took all possible routes as if he was in a F1 race. For him there was no “no-entry”, no “no-free left”. Finally the auto rickshaw reached the destination. The distance from railway station to my house is hardly 5km.The auto driver charged my friend Rs.200.My friend was wonder struck at the fare and finally he had to give him as he was new to the place. He gave him a 500 rupee note and got back the balance.

After the auto rickshaw left, as he was keeping his balance in his purse, he noted a small piece of white paper inside his purse. He took it and it was the train ticket of the morning’s journey from Ernakulum to Coimbatore. He was unmoved for sometime as he noted that the fare was just Rs.60!!!!

The Fourth Estate

In the yesteryears the newspapers were the transcript of the happenings around the world and played a predominant role in our freedom struggle too. But today, in India they are in a frame of doubt as to what they should write and what its impacts are! Recently I happened to see a news report vacillate its stand. I still don’t know what the truth is! In fact we all don’t know what the actual thing is!

Some days ago as we all are aware an encounter took place in Delhi. Two alleged terrorists and a police officer were killed. The newspaper on its prima facie reported the news explaining about the time and background of the incidence portraying it as a real one.

Few days passed by there was a report saying that the encounter may be a fake one similar to the one that took place in Gujarat. There were serious hues and cries about the alienation of the Muslims in this country. People started expressing their views in their letters and were made believe that the encounter was a fake one and there was even a disbelief in the death of the honest police officer who sacrificed his life for the country.

A week later the same newspaper in its editorial points out the exact truth behind the incident and concluded that the encounter was a real one and the police officer lost his life fighting terrorists.

This is the plight of today’s “FOURTH ESTATE” as people find it difficult to differentiate the truth and fiction.
